Is this what you were trying to do http://mrjcd.com/EA8500_DD-WRT/ only with the stock firmware instead of DD-WRT?
I know you said you had a JTAG, is it also like Gallo1961 mentioned a TTL as well? I don't know what the voltage is on the TX/RX on the serial connection on the EA8500, on the WRT series it's 3.3v.
Just trying to maybe give you ideas as to why it isnt working for you.

I was trying to use a usb to serial adaptor but did not work.
I ordered a usb to ttl

Hey guys, was doing an avast scan on my network and it said my router was vulnerable to a masq exploit? The firmware is all updated currently. is this bug planned in a future firmware release?
Google says the issue is resolved in dnsmasq 2.78 so i guess it just needs to update one of the processes? if the firmware isnt planned, is there a way to take care of that manually?

Maybe the issue is you have the same IP Subnet on the local LAN as the Remote LAN which would cause an ambiguity.

255.255.255.0 is a Subnet Mask.
The whole IP Subnet for example is something like 192.168.1.0/24 or 192.168.1.0/255.255.255.0
Why not disconnect the VPN to access the local LAN?

You can try Acrylic WiFi, it should show you the max link speed for every wireless AP around you, including yours.
I just purchased this router, and i cannot find where to block a specific device on my network as well as i cannot prioritize any of my devices.
@chadster766 great news thanks hopefully they'll iron out both the frequencies. Bad thing is by the time they do it i'll be out of my return period and will be stuck with it. If i decide to venture out to npcomplete's lede build to try and remedy this i'll void the warranty

I set up an External Storage USB drive in the Smart WiFi software, and it works great on my laptop. On my desktop PC, I can access the network share, but for some reason, I cannot write to the share, nor can I move files (EG. from the share to my documents folder.) I can do all of this on my laptop, but I get an error message saying I need permission on my desktop. How do i fix this!?
