I did not actually say it in my first reply, sorry hehe. But the original question by @fataltragedy was about a wired network. This issue though exists regardless of the type of network you are using, it is related to DHCP IP assignment and how the Linksys routers handle those requests (specifically requests made by a MAC address already assigned as far as I can tell).
Though you are correct, depending on the scenario there are indeed better workarounds. ;)
I would look into this pump package, though I'm not sure if the thing with the VM's is that related because with VM's you are sharing the connection (though they actually use the "same trick" as each VM has a "virtual" MAC address). But I think maybe your problem had to do with the fact that some devices do not allow traffic from multiple MAC address from the same "port/connection", I don't know if it's security related or it's just a technological limitation.
That being said I will though check out the package as one does never know what can fix the problem unless one tries it out. :)
