I have tried both a Western Digital Elements (2TB) and a Seagate (1.5TB) on my EA3500. Both reproducibly crash the router when I plug them in, similar to what you describe. When I formatted as NTFS, it lasted longer than HFS+, but eventually crashed the router. A small 16BG flash drive seems to work OK. My conclusion is that the USB hard drive storage feature is all but non-functional on Linksys routers, and that you are really asking for trouble if you use large hard drives with many files that the Linksys hardware/software cannot handle, particularly when formatted as HFS+. Of course, two main reason to have external storage is to act as a backup or to serve media (e.g., audio and video), both of which require large hard drives with many files! I suggest that you go with a different brand that offers proper support of external drives.
