With the WRT1900AC, you can use an (external) static DNS in the DHCP options and the router will actually use that for external DNS. There is another option in the WAN configuration where you can specify an external DNS server, but this is only if you set a static IP on the WAN side (but you can't set it for DHCP on the WAN). So if you want to use an external DNS server like OpenDNS or Google, you can set it there.
Having these options separated is confusing (and slightly conflicting), in my opinion...
Both linksyssmartwifi.com and myrouter.local would resolve to the router login page, even with with my static DNS. The EA6900 router always added itself as a last option when using static DNS. Unfortunately, I use PPPoE. I took the EA600 back to Best Buy and exchanged it for the WRT1900AC. Not sure if I should go back or not to the EA6900.
