That's a good point with the EA6900. I haven't used that router, but if you have one I'm curious - what does www.linksyssmartwifi.com resolve to using the router DNS versus an external/static DNS?
With the WRT1900AC, you can use an (external) static DNS in the DHCP options and the router will actually use that for external DNS. There is another option in the WAN configuration where you can specify an external DNS server, but this is only if you set a static IP on the WAN side (but you can't set it for DHCP on the WAN). So if you want to use an external DNS server like OpenDNS or Google, you can set it there.
Having these options separated is confusing (and slightly conflicting), in my opinion...
